Mary's Suitors

Bill (played by Angus Duncan) - perhaps Mary's longest relationship. He was a medical student, who promised to marry her once he finished school. But after he finished, he still wasn't ready to commit.

Frank Carelli (played by John Schuck) - Ex-pro football player who looks for a job as a sportscaster. He was also an old army buddy of Lou Grant's, and he's back in Minneapolis looking for work. But he's more or less a six-foot-four clod...he and Mary have one or two dates.

Eric Matthews (played by Hamilton Camp) - Author of a book called "Toulouse-Lautrec is One of My Favorite Artists", a book about being short...a subject he's all too familiar with! The book is dedicated to Mary. They have a few dates, but his home isn't in Minneapolis.

Allan Stevens (played by Wes Stern) - Lou's nephew, a college-aged kid who hasn't lost his virginity. He likes Mary quite well, and is anxious to get something serious going with her...fast. Lou steers him off of her in a hurry.

Howard Arnell (played by Richard Schaal) - A geeky photographer, high school boyfriend of Mary's who she's dated off and on since high school. He returns to haunt her, and she does her best to steer him off. Eventually, Howard gives up on her.

John Corcoran (played by Monte Markham) - Foreign correspondent who is currently married but still wants a relationship with Mary. She refuses to get anything going with him...at least until he's divorced.

Mike Cooper (played by Michael Constantine) - Old friend of Lou's...Lou fixes him up with Mary. There's not much chemistry between the two of them.

Dan Whitfield (played by Michael Tolan) - The sparks flew high and bright on the night Mary joined Dan's writing night class. He gives her a 'C+' on an essay she wrote, but that doesn't stop them from dating. They do go their separate ways, only to get back together a year or so later after Dan's broken engagement (an engagement broken because of Mary). He returns again one last time several years later. Overall, Dan was without a doubt the prime candidate for Mary's husband. But had they married, the same thing that happened to Rhoda and Joe woulda happened to Mary and Dan.

Matt Bryan (played by Bradford Dillman) - Architect who meets Mary on a weekend morning while sketching her apartment building on his sketchpad. His son, Matt Bryan, Jr., also takes an interest in her, and hilarity ensues as the father and son "fight over" Mary.

Wes Callison (played by Jerry Van Dyke) - Writer for Chuckles the Clown. Loves Mary to death, but he isn't the tall, dark, handsome, witty match Mary's probably looking for. They see each other quite a few times, and twice Wes proposes marriage, knowing full well that Mary's never gonna accept.

Warren Sturges (played by Stuart Margolin) - One of Mary's worst dates ever...she has a hard time getting him to stay away from her after making it clear that she never wants to see him again. The capping incident is Mary's public humiliation of Warren (and herself) in a restaurant.

Doug Slaughter (played by Lew Ayres) - Murray's father, who falls in love with Mary while in town visitng Murray.

Ben Selwyn (played by Alex Rocco) - Old army buddy of Lou's whom Mary doesn't really like, but he's more than anxious to have his way with her.

Joe Warner (played by Ted Bessell) - One of Mary's longer-term relationships. Definitely a good match. At one point, their relationship is tested when Mary decides to see Dan Whitfield again after a hiatus.

Father Terrence Brian (played by Ed Flanders) - Falls in love with Mary and wants to leave the priesthood because of it.

Ken Arnette (played by Laurence Luckinbill) - Ken was actually a very good catch for Mary, but Ken has a bratty son named Stevie and a bunch of cold, nasty relatives who get in the way of their relationship. And for some reason, he's oblivious to his son's horrid personality. Mary: "What's the comic book about?" Stevie: "I don't know, that's why I'm reading it."

Tony Cramer (played by Bernie Kopell) - New Yorker whom Ida Morgenstern sets up with Mary for the night he's in Minneapolis. Tony is a complete and total geek whom Mary never sees again after that night.

David Boyd (played by Clifford David) - Wakes up Lou Grant, who's asleep on Mary's couch when they arrive back at her apartment. Lou punches him in the stomach, quite by accident, and that's the last we ever see of him.

Andy Rivers (played by John Gabriel) - Mary hires him as WJM News sportscaster, and from then on, he appears semi-frequently as her date at the Teddy Awards and other social functions.

Mike Tedesco (played by John Saxon) - Friend of Phyllis', with whom he shares a platonic relationship. She introduces them, and they really, really hit it off and have four or five dates...but he doesn't "try anything" physical with Mary. Turns out that Mike was just ending a three-year relationship with another woman, but after the separation they decided that they couldn't live without each other and decide to marry.

Paul Van Dillen (played by Robert Wolders) - Shallow, yet polite ski instructor with an accent. He and Mary never quite hit it off, and it's pretty well understood that her only attraction to him is physical.

Ross Nelson (played by Anthony Eisley) - Anchorman at a trendy, higher-functioning station in town. Perhaps that fact alone keeps them from seeing each other more regularly.

Steven Linder (played by Peter Strauss) - He's 25, and Mary's 33. They have a few dates, and a party at Steven's apartment (which Rhoda tags along for) is their final "date".

Tom Vernon (played by Joseph Campanella) - He and Mary are more or less crazy about each other, but he's way too old for her. His age and seeming lack of dependability works against their relationship.

William Campbell (played by Gerald Michenaud) - Bess' schoolfriend whom Bess introduces to Mary. Right away, William (age 13 or 14) feels his first excitement over an older woman. He lets Mary know, over lunch, that his feelings for her "aren't just physical."
