The Mary Tyler Moore Show
Classic Sequence Glimpse

Episode 6.7, Chuckles Bites the Dust
The Funeral

REVEREND BURNS: Chuckles the Clown brought pleasure to millions. The characters he played will be remembered by children and adults alike. (with sincerity) Peter Peanut. Mr. Fee Fi Fo. Billy Banana. There was always some deeper meaning to whatever Chuckles did.
(Close shot of Mary trying very hard to stifle laughter.)

Remember Mr. Fee Fi Fo's little catch phrase? Remember how when his arch rival, Senior Caboom, hit him with a giant cucumber and knocked him down? Mr. Fee Fi Fo would always pick himself up...
(Mary laughs aloud now. Everyone looks at her.)
...dust himself off, and say, 'I hurt my foo foo'. (Her coworkers all glare.)

Life's a lot like that...from time to time we all fall down and hurt our foo foos. If only we could deal with it as simply and bravely and honestly as Mr. Fee Fi Fo. And what did Chuckles ask in return? Not much. (Mary is trying earnestly to pay attention to the reverend's speech, but she can't contain herself) In his own words, "a little song, a little dance, a little seltzer down your pants." (She bursts out chorteling wholeheartedly now.) Uh, excuse me, young lady? (Mary turns around to look for other young ladies who might be present). YES, you. Would you stand up, please?

MARY: (weakly) Uhhhhh.......

REVEREND: You feel like laughing, don't you?

MARY: (starts laughing again)

REVEREND: Don't try to hold it back! Go ahead, laugh out loud. You see, nothing would have made Chuckles happier. He lived to make people laugh. (Mary nods approvingly) Tears were offensive to him. Deeply offensive. He hated to see people cry. So go ahead, my dear. Laugh for Chuckles.

MARY: (Waits a beat, then bursts out crying.)
